My town does not have the specialist I need

For anyone whose nearest specialist is an hour and a half away.

It is not your imagination and it is not your fault: 36 towns have no psychiatrist and entire regions lack geriatricians and pulmonologists. We documented it with federal data so it can be seen. While the big fix happens, here is what you can do today.

1

Find where the truly nearest one is

The registry shows how many there are in each region with names and phone numbers. Sometimes the nearest is not in the metro area but in the region next door.

2

Get the referral early and bundle one trip

If you have to travel, try to schedule labs, studies, and the appointment on the same day. Say so when you call: offices help more than you would think.

3

Ask about telemedicine

For follow-ups and results, many specialists see patients by video and you save the whole trip. The first visit sometimes has to be in person; the rest often do not.

4

Look at the medical deserts map, and share it

We documented what exists and what is missing in every town, with the federal source next to it. This starts to change when it is seen.

📞 Before you call, have this ready

Two minutes of prep save you weeks of back and forth.

One important thing, neighbor to neighbor

This is not a substitute for medical advice. We verify public data, but phone numbers, health plans, and availability change. Before you go, call and confirm.
