I need a specialist appointment, fast
For when they gave you an appointment months out and you cannot wait that long.
You called and they gave you an appointment four months out. Breathe: it is not that there is no way, it is that nobody taught you the moves. None of these require knowing anyone.
Ask for the referral today
The primary doctor is the key. Without a referral, many offices will not even take your call. Ask for it by phone today, do not wait for your next visit.
Ask to be put on the cancellation list
Almost every office has one and almost nobody asks. Someone cancels nearly every week, and that slot goes to whoever is on the list.
Call between 8 and 9 in the morning
That is when offices set up their day and release slots. After noon there is almost never anything left.
Widen the region
The same specialist with a 4-month wait in your region may have space in 2 weeks in the next one. The registry shows how many there are in each region, with phone numbers.
Ask about telemedicine
For follow-ups and results, many see patients by video. Sometimes the first evaluation too. Asking costs nothing.
📞 Before you call, have this ready
Two minutes of prep save you weeks of back and forth.
- ✓Have your plan card and ID at hand. The first thing they ask. If it is for a relative, also their date of birth and plan number.
- ✓Ask your primary doctor for the referral first. Many specialists will not book you without one. Request it by phone, do not wait for your next visit.
- ✓Ask these two questions first. "Do you accept my plan?" and "Are you taking new patients?" That saves you the whole trip.
- ✓Ask how long the wait is, and to be put on the cancellation list. Someone cancels almost every week. Whoever is on the list gets that slot.
- ✓Write down who you spoke with and the date. If anything gets tangled later, that note untangles it.
Specialists usually involved here
Each with how many exist on the island, by region and with phone numbers, verified against the federal registry.

One important thing, neighbor to neighbor
This is not a substitute for medical advice. We verify public data, but phone numbers, health plans, and availability change. Before you go, call and confirm.
